The first of two meetings in three days with neighbours Liverpool went the way of Liverpool in a very low scoring echo cup first round tie.
Richie Forsyth won the toss for Sefton Park and chose to bat. Once again wickets tumbled. Just 8 runs were on the board, when both openers, Vandome amd Kelly, and also Bajan Jermain Davis were back in the pavilion. Sadly for the visitors, only one batsman, Dan Coonan batting at No 9 scoring 20 could make it into double figures, as the innings, which at one point stood at 39-8 in the 12th over, closed on 78 all out from 17.1 overs. Liverpool seamer Chris Blythe the chief destroyer, returning figures of 4-10 from his 3.1 overs.
The Liverpool batsmen then found the going just as tough. Robbie Houghton opening the bowling from the river end, conceding just 8 runs in his 4 overs, his first being a wicket maiden. Despite a valiant effort from the Park bowlers, the target of 79 was always going to prove difficult to defend, and despite a regular fall of wickets, the home side reached their target in the 18th over, but not before the loss of 6 wickets. No batsman reached 20. The bowling honours going to skipper Richie Forsyth who took 3-12 from his 3.3 overs.
Liverpool now host Bootle in round two. The sides meet again in the league on Saturday, when Sefton Park will no doubt be looking for revenge.
